I have a number of marks for students but don't know how to compare across tasks/subjects. What do I do?
Upskill on z-scores. This measure will give you an understanding of a student's achievement across subjects relative to the rest of the group. |
Target setting - is there a best way? No, but here's an approach you might like to consider for NAPLAN percentages in bands.
Consider using the SMART band predictor function to set NAPLAN targets. The SMART band predictor function allows the ability to see a new band distribution if students were to increase their result by one, or more marks.
This method has merit as core stage questions, that is, those questions that students should be getting correct for that stage, can be easily identified using the SMART item analysis – accessed by clicking the ‘Item Analysis’ icon. This then becomes a powerful teaching tool as teachers can interact with this data to implement strategies for success with these questions. The school target becomes ‘real’ in the sense that teachers can see how they can contribute to the achievement of this target. The table shows how the results for the percentage of students in the top two and bottom two bands changes by adjusting the results of the group by just one mark. |

What's a data wall and how can I use it?
A data wall displays information. This could be student achievement data or other data. The data wall is considered a high-yield strategy and can be used to support the achievement of strategic and annual planning. Aspects of a data wall: ** focuses attention on the data ** puts faces to the data (and names on faces) ** provides stimulus for discussion ** engages staff in identifying vulnerable students or areas of need for a cohort ** enables positive change to be identified and celebrated Remember the security of student information is paramount - so ensure protocols are in place to guarantee this. Do I use a table or a graph?
